Elections Committee Questions:

What do you see as the biggest challenge facing the AARC, and what do you recommend to address it?

One of the biggest challenges facing the AARC is increasing and retaining members, and member engagement. Member engagement is of the utmost importance for success of the AARC. Currently our membership is increasing, however the AARC must find ways to increase membership. One of the ways could be to offer value to the members to maintain their interest. Perhaps by offering more personalized services. The AARC could accomplish this by gathering and leveraging data to analyze what members need. This will show members the AARC is committed to their success and are meeting members where they are. We often hear about and practice “patient-centered care.” My recommendation is for the AARC is to offer a “member-center culture.” A culture that is inclusive of all members. The AARC is doing a great job of providing ways for members to connect with and support each other, online education opportunities and news feeds. The AARC must examine other ways to retain and onboard new members.

Healthcare is changing more rapidly than ever. What ideas do you have to help today’s respiratory therapist meet these changes?

Education will help today’s respiratory therapist meet the ever changing healthcare industry. Respiratory therapist need to advance the profession by increasing their knowledge, skills and expertise. Becoming an APRT is and will be the catalyst to advance our roles in healthcare. I believe in order for respiratory therapy to be recognized by CMS as a healthcare provider we must hold degrees in higher education as a standard. Respiratory therapist must work be able to practice at the full scope of our licensure in providing patient care. When hiring respiratory therapist employers are recruiting therapist with higher education, and the skill and knowledge to provide the best in patient care. I also believe education has and will open doors for respiratory therapist to practice in alternative settings. RTs are currently working in the insurance industry, doing research, working free standing clinics and physician offices. Education broadens the field of Respiratory Therapy.

Share your thoughts about how you can encourage the AARC Committees, Specialty Sections, and Special Representatives to contribute to the strategic plan for the AARC. How do you see your role in this process?

As Vice President of External Affairs, I will be committed to assisting the the committees, specialty sections and special representatives with meeting their specific charges and reporting. I will encourage ongoing and active communication with the committees, specialty section, and special representative chairs/co-chair on a monthly basis. This communication will be in the form of emails, meetings via Microsoft Teams or Zoom, or by telephone. The communication will involve discussing actionable goals and the progress on measurable goals toward contributing to the strategic plan. As well as developing initiatives to obtain the goals. I believe encouragement comes in many forms, such as genuine praise for accomplishment, providing open communication and feedback, as well as being available when needed. I plan to encourage by fostering participation and ensuring the committees, specialty sections and special representatives’ work is brought to the attention of the BOD and members.
