Asthma is a reversible disease requiring appropriate pharmacological treatment by the Respiratory Therapist.

This presentation will cover existing and new aerosolized medications recommended by national and international guidelines in both acute and maintenance treatment of the disease.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, asthma is one of the leading causes of school absenteeism in the United States. The respiratory therapist has a unique role in not only the diagnosis and treatment of asthma but also in helping patients and families develop good asthma self-management skills to prevent the negative impact of asthma, including school absenteeism. This presentation will discuss asthma and its impact on student absenteeism, the role of the AAP as a surveillance tool in school districts and the importance of students with asthma having an AAP on record.
