Advocacy Do’s and Don’ts 

The most effective advocates combine clinical expertise with clear, respectful communication. By preparing thoughtfully, sharing meaningful patient stories, and making specific legislative requests, AARC members help shape policies that improve respiratory care for patients nationwide. Below are some dos and don’t for advocacy work. 

Do 

  • Be professional and courteous. 
  • Focus on patients. 
  • Keep messages concise. 
  • Use evidence to support your points. 
  • Listen carefully. 
  • Ask for support. 
  • Thank the office for its time. 

Don’t 

  • Assume prior knowledge of respiratory therapy. 
  • Overwhelm the meeting with technical details. 
  • Argue or become partisan. 
  • Criticize other health professions. 
  • Discuss unrelated political issues. 
  • Leave without making a specific request.
