Why Advocacy Matters in 2026

A Defining Year for Respiratory Care

Healthcare is undergoing one of its most significant transformations in decades. Care is increasingly moving beyond hospital walls into physician practices, patients’ homes, community health centers, and virtual care environments. At the same time, policymakers are seeking solutions that improve quality, reduce costs, address workforce shortages, and expand access to care.

Respiratory therapists are uniquely positioned to help meet these national priorities.

Across the country, respiratory therapists are expanding their roles in chronic disease management, pulmonary rehabilitation, home oxygen management, remote patient monitoring, tobacco treatment, sleep medicine, critical care, emergency preparedness, and community-based care. Yet federal policy has not fully kept pace with these evolving responsibilities.

Congress is considering legislation that would modernize Medicare policy, strengthen the respiratory care workforce, improve access to supplemental oxygen, expand telehealth services, and support biomedical research for respiratory diseases.

Your engagement helps ensure that these policies reflect the realities of patient care.
