A Scoping Review of the Contributions of Respiratory Therapists in the United States of America

About this Webcast

Join us for an engaging webinar. Respiratory therapists (RTs) are integral members of critical care teams in the United States, with expertise in mechanical ventilation, airway management, and protocol-based interventions. This scoping review synthesizes peer-reviewed and grey literature sources regarding how RTs contribute to patient care in critical care. Using the Respiratory Therapy Practice-Based Outcomes Initiative (RT-PBOI) model and value-efficiency metrics, the review highlights both the breadth of RT practice and the variability across institutions and regions. The findings emphasize the essential role of RTs in optimizing critical care while also identifying important gaps in evidence and opportunities to define further and expand their scope of practice.

  1. Explain the key roles and responsibilities of respiratory therapists in adult critical care settings in the United States.
  2. Describe how respiratory therapy contributions in critical care have been classified within the Respiratory Therapy Practice-Based Outcomes Initiative (RT-PBOI) framework.
  3. Examine how respiratory therapy practice has been measured using value-efficiency metrics.
  4. Identify gaps in the current evidence base regarding respiratory therapy roles and responsibilities in critical care.
  5. Discuss opportunities to strengthen the evidence base and highlight the evolving value and scope of respiratory therapy practice.
