AI and the Future of Patient Ventilation
D. John Doyle, MD, PhD, DPhil
As artificial intelligence (AI) gradually moves from theory to bedside, mechanical ventilation is becoming increasingly adaptive, data-driven, and patient-specific. This talk explores how AI-powered ventilator systems are steadily transforming critical care—from automated mode selection and dynamic weaning algorithms to real-time detection of patient–ventilator asynchrony and prevention of ventilator-induced lung injury. Drawing on recent clinical trials and emerging machine-learning tools, Dr. Doyle will discuss the current state of intelligent ventilation, practical implementation challenges, and the ethical implications of decision-support automation in respiratory care. Participants will leave with a clear understanding of how AI can complement clinician judgment to deliver safer, more efficient, and more individualized ventilation.

Volume Targeted Ventilation in Extremely Low Birth Weight Neonates
Carolyn LaVita
Historically, the main modes of mechanical ventilation for neonatal patients have been SIMV or AC/PC. Recent systematic reviews and meta-analysis support the use of a volume targeted mode of ventilation. We will discuss developments in mechanical ventilators and technical aspects of VTV, literature supporting its use, and considerations for bedside clinicians.

Assessing Lung Recruitability — How To Do It At The Bedside
Dr. Marcelo Amato
Explore the ongoing controversy surrounding the use of recruitment maneuvers (RMs) in current clinical practice, particularly in light of findings from the ART trial. We'll discuss how this study has influenced perceptions of RMs, and the critical role of assessing lung recruitability to guide whether a recruitment maneuver is appropriate in individual patients.

HFOV: What We Know and What We’re Still Learning
Ira Cheifetz, MD, FCCM, FAARC
In this session, we will explore the medial literature related to high frequency oscillatory ventilation. Discuss the ongoing PROSpect study and what we hope to learn. Consider HFOV management strategies for patients with PARDS.
