The AARC Board of Directors sets the organizational strategy and provides general direction to the Executive Director. The Board is responsible for:
- Direction: The board guards the purpose of the organization through the development of the strategic plan, goals, policies, etc., provides direction for the organization.
- Oversight: The board is responsible for monitoring the activities and ethical behavior of the organization.
- Resources: The board is responsible for ensuring that the organization is equipped to fulfill its purpose, strategic plan, and direction of the organization (i.e. financial stewardship, capable and sufficient staff, and high reputation).
The Executive Director and Staff members are responsible for:
- Management of day-to-day operations.
- Implementation of board-approved programs and strategic plan tactics.
- Informing members of board decisions.
- Providing organizational continuity.
- Supporting volunteers, committee, workgroups, and taskforces as needed.

How do members join the Board of Directors?
The officers and directors of the Board of Directors are elected by Active and Life members of the AARC through an online election held annually. The ballot is developed each year by the AARC Elections Committee upon review of nominations received from the Board of Directors, House of Delegates, and Sections with positions on the ballot.
Who can nominate?
- Board of Directors nominates for Board Officer positions (President-Elect, Vice Presidents, and Secretary/Treasurer)
- House of Delegates nominate for the Director at Large position
- Members of each Specialty Section nominate for their respective Section Chair-Elect position

Position Summaries
The officers of the association shall consist of the President, President-Elect, Immediate Past President, Secretary/Treasurer, Vice President-Internal Affairs, and Vice President-External Affairs.
AARC President-Elect and President
- Term includes two years as president-elect, two years as president, and two years as immediate past president.
- The President-Elect primarily uses their term in preparation for the Presidency and may at times function as the President.
- The President is the primary officer of the Association and has the fiduciary responsibility for all AARC activities during their term. The President is responsible to the Association membership through the Board of Directors.
Immediate Past President
- Advise and consult with the President.
- Serve as a member of the Bylaws Committee, Elections Committee, Executive Committee, and Finance Committee.
- Serve as Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee (Article XII: section 2c.1 of the AARC Bylaws).
- Serve as a liaison to the Board of Medical Advisors.
Vice President for Internal Affairs
- Serves as the Association’s liaison to internal committees and performs duties as assigned by the President and Board of Directors.
- Serves as a member of the Executive and Finance Committees
Vice President for External Affairs
- Serves as the Association’s liaison to external agencies, associations, and organizations and performs duties as assigned by the President and Board of Directors.
Secretary-Treasurer
- Oversees the documentation of the proceedings of all regularly scheduled and special Association meetings.
- Ensures that all corporate documents are in order and filed as appropriate.
- Responsible for overseeing the general fiscal operations, control, and reporting of the Association, its Board of Directors, and its Executive Office. The Secretary-Treasurer is responsible to the President of the Association to carry out these and other duties as assigned.
Director/Section Chair
- The Director is a member of the governing body of the Association that is responsible for all business and other activities of the AARC.
- The Director represents the membership in the best interests of the Association.
- The individual Director is responsible to the membership through the President.
- The Director may be elected to either a “Director-at-Large” position by the active membership of the Association or a “Section Director” position by the membership of each Specialty Section of at least 1,000 active members of the Association. The specific duties of the Director are similar for either position.
- Current Specialty Sections with a Board of Directors seat include Leadership & Management, Education, Diagnostic, Neonatal & Pediatrics, and Adult Acute Care.
