Patient Literacy

Featuring Bill Galvin MEd, CPFT, AE-C, FAARC

Literacy is a huge problem in society. In health care, it has been described as “a silent epidemic” and its impact on our patient’s ability to receive adequate and appropriate medical care significantly compromised. Only recently has it received notoriety and have we begun to see the devastating consequences it produces. This presentation will provide the participant with: a definition of terms associated with literacy, a statement of the problem, to include; statistics and practical examples of both societal and health-related situations, an explanation of the role of language, communication, culture and education on literacy, and potential solutions, remedies and interventions that will aid the respiratory therapist in his/her quest to alleviate the problems of literacy, improve patient compliance and enhance self management.
