Inhaled medications have a long history as critical, front-line medications for a variety of respiratory problems. Unfortunately, the delivery devices used to administer these medications have an equally long history of being improperly used. This usually leads to lower dose delivery, excessive costs (to the system and the patient), and suboptimal outcomes. It can also lead to increased healthcare utilization, a major concern during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The good news is, we now have tools available to confirm what we’re teaching is what our patients are hearing, and to ensure the people in our care have the tools and knowledge to optimize their inhaled med regimens. This session will cover barriers to good technique, why they’ve been so difficult to overcome, and how to help patients of any age or condition get the most out of their inhalers.
