What steps will you take to strengthen international exposure of respiratory care?
AARC has had good exposure with several international groups by having officers and members of the Executive Office attend their meetings and has provided the scientific journal in many languages. International membership has grown with the availability of the AARC web site on the Internet and the Respiratory Care Journal on the Internet. The efforts of the international committee have been recognized by increasing the numbers of fellows who are hosted in U.S. institutions just prior to the international congress. In the future the AARC should consider offering more formal education or exchange of additional scientific speakers at international events. Continuing on these efforts will enhance the relationship the AARC has with an international audience.
How would you suggest we recruit and educate the leaders of the future for the AARC?
AARC has provided a leadership tract at the International Congress and have provided state presidents with a leadership meeting. Continuing and enhancing these educational opportunities will assist in the growth and development of future leaders for the AARC. I think in addition the AARC could offer some leadership articles in the AARC Times to assist in the development of chartered affiliate management. Recently an affiliate consultant has been added to the AARC to provide development services to chartered affiliates. In the future perhaps emails to the sections to solicit committee membership may be an additional way to create a mentoring path to AARC leadership.
With the introduction of the Medicare Respiratory Therapy Initiative Bill in Congress, how are you going to work to get that bill successfully passed?
Passage of the Medicare Respiratory Therapy Initiative Bill will require strong grass roots activity. I will continue to contact members of Congress and the Senate as well as encouraging all respiratory therapists to assist in the effort. I will participate in any actions necessary to pass this exciting bill. I would welcome involvement from key consumers and would make myself available to speak with them regarding the bill. I also donate to the PAC so that AARC has the dollars necessary for the lobby efforts needed in Washington.
