What steps will you take to strengthen international exposure of respiratory care?
I would move toward more ease in conversion of publications to other languages so that our leadership position as the respiratory care profession's guiding force is easier to understand for those in the world not fluent in English. We should work towards providing additional AARC Fellows positions each year. These positions have proven that they provide the framework for the growth in our stature as a profession in a world where our structure of care using respiratory therapists is different in the U.S. compared to most other countries. I would work towards more exchange of speakers for respiratory care educational topics with other countries using the vast wealth of talent we have in our profession, many of whom are multi-lingual.
How would you suggest we recruit and educate the leaders of the future for the AARC?
We must bridge the gaps in communications and mentoring across the three generations we have in our profession today. This includes media, communications methods and old fashion one-to-one mentoring. Approaches to mentoring are somewhat different today, however what remains the same is early identification and mentoring of new professionals in our field. At the same time, we must provide talented individuals from the management and education venues to work closely with these individuals on terms and with methods that they identify with. The most senior members of our profession have a vast wealth of knowledge and experience that must be brought to bear on our profession as the future is being determined by our present actions. We must devote our time and energy to grow our future leaders as many of us have been nurtured by former leaders.
With the introduction of the Medicare Respiratory Therapy Initiative Bill in Congress, how are you going to work to get that bill successfully passed?
As a former Co-Chair for the PACT Team in New York I will continue to work with local and national groups to support the legislation through visits and correspondence to legislators. I will target leaders of the committees of jurisdiction such as Ways and Means, Commerce and Energy and Finance. Even though I am from New York, the Senators and Representatives of these Committees hold the keys to the passage of this important legislation. I have learned through licensure activities that the movement out of the main committees is always the key to the passage of legislation. These key players will mean the movement of our bill forward to passage into law.
