Local Therapist Honored by National Respiratory Foundation

Dallas, TX (December 17, 2012) —The American Respiratory Care Foundation (ARCF) honored Melaine Giordano, RN, CPFT with the Dr. Charles H. Hudson Award for Cardiopulmonary Public Health, given at the largest national meeting of respiratory therapists held each year.

Melaine Giordano, from Carrollton, TX, has dedicated her career to ensuring people with asthma, COPD, and other pulmonary conditions have the information and education they need to stay as healthy as possible. She has led numerous efforts with the American Association for Respiratory Care to educate community members at events and in helping design a website for patients with lung problems called YourLungHealth.org. She has also worked with the USO and Honor Flight programs to help countless service men and women and veterans of service.

The annual Hudson award recognizes efforts to positively influence the public’s awareness of cardiopulmonary health and wellness. Past recipients of this prestigious award include Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Senator Frank Lautenberg, the American Lung Association, and the Allergy & Asthma Network—Mothers of Asthmatics, Inc.

The award is funded by an endowment from Hudson RCI, and was established in 1986 in honor of the company’s founder, Charles H. Hudson.

Respiratory therapists are specialized health care providers who take care of people with lung conditions ranging from asthma to COPD. They work throughout the acute care hospital on the general wards, in the emergency department, and in the intensive care units, and are also increasingly employed in sleep centers, physician offices, outpatient clinics, pulmonary rehabilitation programs, skilled nursing facilities, and patients’ homes.

CPFT stands for Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist
