Position Statement
Pulmonary Rehabilitation
- A program of pulmonary rehabilitation should be included in the overall management of respiratory disease to assist the patient in returning to an optimal role in society. Because of the nature of respiratory disease resulting in disability, an effective program utilizing respiratory care, bronchopulmonary drainage, exercise therapy and cardiopulmonary evaluation is essential.
A team approach is essential in developing and conducting a respiratory rehabilitation program. Each health discipline must lend its expertise to ensure optimal rehabilitation. With medical direction, the respiratory therapist and the certified respiratory therapy technician, by virtue of specialized training, interest and relationship to the patient's respiratory care, are a key ingredient in a successful rehabilitation program.
