AARC Member Represents Profession
on New Career Site
March 17, 2004
Getting more young people interested in health care careers is becoming
a top priority among just about everyone these days. The latest organization
to jump into the fray is the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Their new web site – dubbed LifeWorks
– is aimed at helping middle and high school students explore health
and medical careers. One way they’re doing that is to feature
“Success Stories” where kids can find out more about specific professions
from people working in those fields.
One of the first to land in the spotlight has been respiratory therapy.
AARC
member Dennis Brown, RRT, shares his experiences in an extensive interview
– complete with photos of him on the job at the NIH in Bethesda, MD
– telling why he chose the profession, the kind of equipment he uses
on the job, what his typical workday entails, what he likes best about
his work, what his goals for the future are, and what he likes to do
outside of work.
He even puts in a plug for the AARC, noting that he’s a member
and identifying the Association as the professional society for the
respiratory therapist.
Kids can find out a lot more about the profession too, by clicking
on “respiratory
therapist” at the top of Brown’s interview. This
link takes them to a summary of the profession; job description; educational
requirements; skills, abilities and interests; and where to go for more
information.
