November is COPD Awareness Month!
November 9, 2004
The AARC is once again busy helping the nation celebrate National COPD
Awareness Month. This annual recognition of the nation’s fourth
leading cause of death is now in it’s fourth year, and the momentum
is growing, as respiratory therapists and other health care professionals
use the occasion to educate the public and their patients about the
disease and how it is treated.
Chief among our efforts this year is a special “60 Second Checkup”
on COPD that’ll be airing this month on radio stations all over
the country. The clip – part of the AARC’s ongoing “60
Second Checkup” series – features Ken Thigpen, RRT, who
talks about the disease and the importance of early detection and treatment.
The AARC has also acquired several proclamations from the states officially
declaring November COPD Awareness Month. These official documents go
a long way in raising awareness of the disease, not only among the general
public, but also among the state governors who sign them, as they come
away with a better understanding of the need to devote more public and
private resources to this national health concern.
So as you march through the month of November, remember that it’s
a perfect time to let everyone you meet know more about COPD –
and how respiratory therapists are vitally involved in the care and
treatment of the disease.
Congratulations to the following states for proclaiming November National
COPD Awareness Month:
