AARC Endorses Warning Label Strategy

The AARC endorses the broad tobacco control strategy announced at the November 10, 2010 press conference hosted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
As part of the new strategy, the FDA has proposed a rule that will require new bolder health warnings on cigarette packages and advertisements, including graphic images that will have to cover 50% of the package surface or 20 percent of tobacco ad space. Once this is fully implemented by 2012, these new warnings and images will be the most significant change in cigarette advertising in more than 25 years, according to HHS, which reports tobacco use is the leading cause of premature and preventable death in the U.S. and is responsible for 443,000 deaths a year.
For decades the AARC has participated as a partner in public health coalitions united in efforts to increase regulation on tobacco products and educate the public on the dangers of smoking. The AARC has, in particular emphasized the important role that the respiratory therapist plays in smoking cessation programs and assisting their patients in achieving a smoke free lifestyle. And our efforts are recognized by federal policymakers.
To that end the AARC attended the invitation only HHS/FDA press conference held in Washington, D.C. where this important new tobacco control strategy initiative was announced. The AARC will continue its commitment to the improvement of lung health.
