This well-established and highly successful AARC program is a 1 1/2-day course designed to assist those involved in asthma education and those interested in becoming an Asthma Educator-Certified (AE-C), a credential awarded by the National Asthma Educator Certification Board (NAECB). (Visit www.naecb.org for information on the NAECB examination, including dates/sites when the exam will be offered. Note: This course is not endorsed, cosponsored or in any way affiliated with the NAECB.) The content of the course is based on the content outline of the NAECB examination and will assist the respiratory therapist in recall, application, and analysis as it relates to specific areas of the examination. In addition to the content related to the NAECB examination, information about asthma disease management and asthma management protocols will be presented. Topics to be covered on the course include:

  • Pathophysiology and epidemiology of asthma
  • Pharmacologic management of asthma
  • Review and interpretation of pulmonary function
  • Patient history and physical assessment
  • Teaching patients self-management skills and behavioral modification
  • Environmental factors of asthma
  • Identification and remediation
  • Development, implementation, and evaluation of an asthma management plan
  • Devices and adjuncts to asthma self-management
  • Asthma protocols
  • Identifying and measuring asthma disease management programs outcomes

At the beginning of the program, attendees will be provided with a self-scoring examination to assist them in gauging their knowledge about the topics to be presented in the course. At the conclusion, participants will have an opportunity to review their results with the program faculty. This course is designed for respiratory therapists, therefore assumes a basic working knowledge of asthma and its management.
