This well-established and highly successful AARC program is a 1 1/2-day course designed to assist respiratory therapists, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care professionals who are actively involved in asthma education and want to earn the Asthma Educator-Certified (AE-C), a credential awarded by the National Asthma Educator Certification Board (NAECB). (Visit www.naecb.org for information on the NAECB examination, including sites the exam will be offered. Note: This course is not endorsed, cosponsored or in any way affiliated with the NAECB.)

The content of the course is based on the content outline of the NAECB examination and will assist the participants in recall, application, and analysis as it relates to specific areas of the examination. Topics to be covered on the course include:

  • Pathophysiology and epidemiology of asthma
  • Pharmacologic management of asthma
  • Review and interpretation of pulmonary function
  • Patient history and physical assessment
  • Teaching patients self-management skills and behavioral modification
  • Environmental factors of asthma
  • Identification and remediation of asthma triggers
  • Development, implementation, and evaluation of an asthma management plan
  • Devices and adjuncts to asthma self-management
  • Identifying and measuring asthma disease management programs outcomes
  • Managing psychosocial issues from a clinic-based perspective
  • Tips on improving your odds of success in taking tests

This program will be held at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel. It has been approved for 10.25 hours of continuing education credit (CRCE) for respiratory therapists. This continuing nursing education activity was approved 12.3 hours of CE by the Illinois Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
