In 2015, CMS proposed major changes to its Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Programs (CHIP). Among the changes was a provision under coordination and continuity of care to “ensure each enrollee receives access to an ongoing source of care appropriate to their needs.” In addition, states were required to address how they would access and improve quality of health care and services to all CHIP enrollees. In comments to CMS, AARC advocated for Medicaid managed care plans to have a sufficient number of licensed respiratory therapists on staff in order to meet the goals of the proposed regulations. This is another opportunity for RTs to meet the needs of individuals suffering from chronic respiratory conditions.
