Resolutions Update

Pat Munzer, MS, RRT
HOD Past Speaker

Since the HOD adjourned before the Board in June 2000 at Vail, I was unable to report back to the HOD the action taken by the Board regarding the resolutions. Even though many of you know the outcomes already, here is the official actions taken at the June 4-6, 2000 AARC Board of Directors meeting.

HR 16-00-02: "Resolved that the AARC adjust its public relations strategy to focus more strongly on student recruitment" was referred to the Executive Office.

HR 00-00-07: "Resolved that the AARC address with the National Board of Nursing the nationwide problem occurring with the nursing delegation of respiratory therapies to unlicensed assistive personnel and that the executive office prepare an action plan for states to follow to deal with these issues." was amended as follows:

"Resolved that the AARC address with the appropriate national nursing organization(s) the nationwide problem occurring with the nursing delegation of respiratory therapies to unlicensed assistive personnel and that the executive office prepare an action plan for states to follow to deal with these issues" was referred to the Executive Office.

HR 43-00-08: "Resolved that the AARC develop a video that is based on the current "Life and Breath 2000" video to promote the role of the respiratory therapist in health care" was referred to the Executive Office for investigation of cost and feasibility and report back to the BOD at the fall 2000 meeting.

HR 43-00-09: "Resolved that the AARC Executive Office contact the College Board and ask that Respiratory Therapy be placed on the PSAT exam application as an area of interest" was approved.

HR 43-00-10: "Resolved that the AARC Executive Office contact the National Research Council for College and University Admissions (NRCCUA) and ask that respiratory therapy be added as a career option in the NRCCUA database" was approved.

This is the first year since 1994, that I am aware of, that the Past Speaker was present when the House discussed the resolutions instead of attending the BOD meeting. This was a good decision which allowed me to understand more fully the HOD's rationale and then be able to present, with a greater degree of knowledge, that rationale to the Board. It was very rewarding to see how well the House and Board were on the same wavelength.

Since the House has changed its meetings from two and one half days to two days, I recommended to Speaker Ken Thigpen that the resolutions be discussed in the morning on the second day of the meeting. Hopefully this would allow the Board to act on them in early afternoon allowing an update to be given to the House before it adjourns.
