Past Speaker'S Report

Pat Munzer, MS, RRT
House of Delegates

You may be aware that not all AARC Committee reports make it into the June agenda book. The reports from the Student Recruitment Committee and the Position Statement Committee did not make it in but have topical information that I'd like to share with you.

David Shelledy, Chair of the Student Recruitment Committee, and his committee members Mike Runge, Linda Van Scoder, Linda Smith, Margaret Traband, and Carl Wiezalis developed the following committee objectives and are working on completing them by the

Fall of 2000. While reviewing the objectives below, you will note that several of them have been completed already and are identified with an asterisk. Those that are not asterisk are in progress.

  • Develop a career counselor information packet.
  • Identify career counselor organizations and provide respiratory care information to them.
  • *Develop a letter to career counselors to advise them of respiratory care as a career option.
  • Partner with state affiliates to provide an information table and/or booth at career counselor state and regional meetings to disseminate information about RT as a career.
  • Explore placing the new "Life and Breath 2000" video on CD.
  • *Explore placing the new "Life and Breath 2000" video on the AARC web site for video streaming.
  • *Ensure that the AARC web home page has a "button" for "RTCareer Information".
  • *Work with the Executive Office to develop the career information section of the AARC web site.
  • Develop a mechanism to involve RT managers in marketing the profession and student recruitment.
  • Explore a presentation for a future summer forum or other national meeting on "marketing the profession." This presentation would target managers and educators, and would include marketing the profession to health care administrators, health care decision makers (payers/regulators), legislators, the health care community, health care consumers, the general public, and prospective students.
  • Develop an ongoing marketing plan for student recruitment targeting counselors, parents, prospective students and the general public.

Patricia Doorley chairs the Position Statement Committee. Members of that committee are William Bernhard, Garry Kauffman, David Shelledy and Ken Thigpen. At the June BOD meeting one of this committee's recommendations was to implement a review process for all of the AARC Position Statements. Each statement would be reviewed at least once every three years on a rotating basis. It was thought that those statements scheduled for review could be published and distributed to all parties of interest annually - BOD, HOD, Section and Committee Chairs, Executive Office, etc.

Having served on this committee in the past, I know how overwhelming reviewing all the Position Statements at one time can be. I believe reviewing one-third of the AARC Position Statements annually will definitely make the task less onerous. The "Statement List With Proposed Scheduled Review Dates" is attached at the end of this issue of The Record.
